UPDATE - APRIL 23

Solis log: 33 40'18N 173 43'20E

Things are going well. We're holding steady between 8 and 10 knots. Nothing too special to report. Out on deck pretty much all day today. Just hanging out talking with Dad, who managed to keep himself up there all day as well. Luke made an amazing dinner. Corn bread and chili. What a treat.

As for fishing....we were so excited about fishing. A good friend of mine put together this great fishing kit for us. Luke has been a great fisherman so I assumed we would be catching fish like crazy. Well, nothing to report....we've used every lure, every combination of weight, no weight, everything...we've left different combinations of lures out there for days at a time...but nothing. Just birds try and grab our lures. Hopefully Hawaii will be better for grabbing some protein.

The day after tomorrow we will be crossing the International date line. That is kind of exciting. Even now wehave changed our watches a couple of times, jumping zones.

Perhaps we will rename the King, "Chef Louie?" Then, Marina can make a second shirt that says, "Chef's Louie's Sail and Dine!"

Corn Bread and Chili sounds great. Keep trying different tactics. Sushi is bound to show up for dinner soon!

Since I started reading your blog I have gone from paralyzing fear to singing with you, feeling nauseous to smelling tea and salty air. Your descriptions are that good.
Marc and I are following your voyage through the map your friend posted and hanging on your words.
Chef Luke has outdone himself, glad to hear Ron is better.
Cheers

Wow, no fish? That really surprises me, what with the “Chronic Barnacle” laying down a chum slick all the way from Japan (sorry Ron) It is my understanding that there is a lot of fish in the sea, or so I have been told. Traveling at 8 to 10 knots per hour I think the only thing that can hit is a large bill fish and in that case you are gunna have a whole lot of sushi on your hands. Try taking an hour or so and slow down to 2-3 knots and very the length of line you have out. At 10 knots you could tie an anchor to the end of your line and it would still be on the surface.
Enjoy the sunrise and sunsets as if you have never seen one.

Thinking of and praying for you all,
Gene

It's like a reunion out here. Patrick Dorn, wow it's been many years.
Is that London Ryan or California Ryan?

I'm going to put my vote down for May 11, it's Mother's Day so seems like a good choice.

I am truly proud of these boys, the strength of spirit they are bringing forth from within themselves and sharing with all of us is amazing.
Unless you're on the blog these days it's hard to converse about this trip.

Love the tee shirt ideas. Can we get them made by the time they sail into Berkeley?
I'm looking forward to "Chef Louie" in my galley!

so much love and gratitude,
shannon

New T-shirt idea:

Eat at Chronic Barnacle's Chum Slick! Best grub on the Pacific!
(sorry Dad...just having a little fun!)

Sounds like chile and cornbread has made a 5 star rating. Even Ron was keeping it down. I spoke with him after midnight last night. He sounded like he was next door. His voice was still hoarse from the stain of the upchucks but his Spirits were great. He's taken off the patch and is getting a bit better everyday. Looks like some good synchronicity with Chef Louie's culinary talents. I'll put my order in for a t-shirt....or how bout a prep cook apron with a picture of Solis and the crew on the front eating chile and on the back.....oh never mind. Ron reports that Luke and Darshaun are doing great. The winds are good. The sea is rough. Continued prayers to the sailors and lots of aloha and gratitude to the blogsters.
Love you crew!
Toni
